Syria holds a wealth of extraordinary archaeological and architectural heritage. The current conflict in Syria has left damage at all UNESCO World Heritage sites in the country, from both fighting and looting. The damage has caused UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova to call for respect on each side of the conflict to respect the country's heritage.
