The Academy's Frequent Also-Rans
For every star honored by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences with a gold statuette on Feb. 26, another four will leave the Oscar ceremony disappointed. It's especially tough on those nominees who are snubbed year after year.
The 84th Academy Awards feature two such actresses, Meryl Streep and Glenn Close, competing for the same award. Streep (left) has been nominated for acting Oscars 17 times, more often than anyone else. She has won twice, most recently for her role in 1982's "Sophie's Choice." This year, Streep's role as Margaret Thatcher in "The Iron Lady" could net her a third Oscar -- or it could be her 15th loss.
